Teaching British Values
British Values at Our Lady’s Catholic Primary School
The Government first introduced British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy and later provided guidance for schools in Promoting Fundamental British Values as Part of SMSC in Schools (2014). All schools are expected to actively promote these values, which include:
-
Democracy – understanding how citizens can participate in decision-making.
-
Rule of Law – recognising the importance of laws and the responsibilities they bring.
-
Individual Liberty – understanding personal freedoms and making safe, informed choices.
-
Mutual Respect – valuing and treating others with respect.
-
Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs – appreciating diversity and understanding different perspectives.
At Our Lady’s, these values are fully integrated into our school ethos, PSHCE programme, and across the wider curriculum. They are reinforced daily through lessons, activities, and discussions, helping pupils understand their role in a diverse and inclusive society.
The school’s RE curriculum offers a broad and balanced understanding of the world’s major faiths. Pupils learn to recognise both the shared values that unite people and the differences in beliefs and practices, appreciating and valuing all equally. Thoughtful debate and discussion are encouraged to help children deepen their understanding of diversity and develop respect for different perspective.
