Teaching British Values
British Values at Our Lady’s Catholic Primary School
The Government first introduced British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy and later provided guidance for schools in Promoting Fundamental British Values as Part of SMSC in Schools (2014). All schools are expected to actively promote these values, which include:
Democracy – understanding how everyone has a voice and can play an active role in decision-making. We explore how citizens can share their opinions, make choices, vote and work together to help shape their communities, recognising the importance of fairness, equality and listening to others.
Rule of Law – understanding why laws and rules are important in keeping us safe, protecting our rights and helping society to work fairly. We explore how laws apply to everyone, the responsibilities we have as citizens and how following rules helps create a safe, respectful and fair community where everyone can thrive.
Individual Liberty – understanding the importance of personal freedom, independence and the right to make our own choices. We explore how to express our opinions, make safe and informed decisions, and take responsibility for our actions, while respecting the rights, beliefs and freedoms of others. We encourage our children to grow in confidence, develop independence and recognise the importance of making positive choices.
Mutual Respect – understanding the importance of valuing everyone as unique and special, treating others with kindness, dignity and consideration. We encourage our children to celebrate differences, appreciate different beliefs and opinions, and show empathy and understanding towards others. Through our Catholic ethos and RUAH values, we promote a culture of kindness, inclusion and respect, where everyone feels valued, welcomed and loved.

Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs – developing an understanding and appreciation of the rich diversity of faiths, beliefs and cultures within our school and wider community. We encourage our children to be curious, ask questions and learn about different religious traditions and world-views with kindness, openness and respect. Through our Catholic ethos, we celebrate the uniqueness of every individual, promote understanding and acceptance, and help our children recognise that, although we may have different beliefs and perspectives, we are all deserving of dignity, compassion and respect.
At Our Lady’s, these values are fully integrated into our school ethos, PSHCE programme, and across the wider curriculum. They are reinforced daily through lessons, activities, and discussions, helping pupils understand their role in a diverse and inclusive society.
The school’s RE curriculum offers a broad and balanced understanding of the world’s major faiths. Pupils learn to recognise both the shared values that unite people and the differences in beliefs and practices, appreciating and valuing all equally. Thoughtful debate and discussion are encouraged to help children deepen their understanding of diversity and develop respect for different perspective.
